Updated Shot Clock Rules

2020-11-16

A great resource for shot clock operators!

SHOT CLOCK GUIDELINES – PROPEL & CONTROL
1.  Before Game Ready
  • Find the shot clock controls
  • Make sure shot clocks are on and working
  • Shot clock operator should be positioned to see the rink /follow play and discuss with refs.
  • Before game starts, Let officials know if there are areas of the ice you cannot see.
2. Game starts
  • Shot Clock starts when the whistle is blown.
  • The shot clock stops when the Officials whistle goes off, it’s BEST TO HIT STOP then Reset.
  • In the event of poor sight, you should NOT reset the clock and wait for official's signal.
  • Shot Clock Operator may be asked to run the 30 second time outs if instructed by official.
3. Resets
  • Reset occurs when; there is a shot on net or Goalie, control of the ring changes from one team to another, a delayed Penalty is called and the official calls for a reset.
  • Reset only on the first Penalty if multiple penalties are called on the same play.
  • A shot on goal is taken when the team in possession of the ring legally propels the ring toward the other team’s goal.
Examples: The ring enters the net, the ring contacts a goal post or cross bar, goal keeper or AGK.
(AGK – ACTING GOAL KEEPER). The ring going over the top of net or hitting the side of the net is not a reset.
The ring contacts the goalkeeper outside the goal crease and that contact prevents the ring from entering the net. Is this a reset?

4. Change Of Control Reset
Example of change in control:
  • Intercepted pass by Opposition, Goalie catches ring and has 5 seconds to pass – shot clock is reset when the Goalie caught the ring, do not reset the clock when they pass the ring to their own team.
  • Deflection off goalie causes a reset for the shooting team, then, if the goalies teammate picks it up from the rebound the shot clock is reset again.
  • If the team in control of the ring passes to her own goalie it is NOT A RESET.
  • Player shoots the ring toward goal. An opposition player propels the ring with her stick, redirecting the ring. Opposition now has control of ring.
  • Example of propel would be if the team not in control of the ring hits (propels) the ring with force in a different direction by use of stick, side of foot or hand.
5. Errors
  • White has ring and scrum develops if opposition comes out with ring – reset, if white comes out with ring do not reset.
  • If shot clock is reset in error the clock continues.
  • If play is stopped for an injured player and the injured player's team has control of the ring the clock is STOPPED, DO NOT RESET.
  • If play is stopped for an injured player and the other team has control of the ring, the shot clock should be reset to 30 seconds.
White, White, White, reset, Black, Black. Try to say this in your mind to make it easier.
Relax, concentrate, don't panic and enjoy.
